About the Proton X70 SUV
The Proton X70 first arrived in Malaysia in 2018 and quickly became a favourite in the local C-segment SUV market thanks to its combination of space, technology and value. Today’s 2025 X70 facelift updates the SUV with a bold new front grille, slimmer LED headlights, refreshed bumpers and two-tone wheels, giving it a more modern and confident look on the road. Inside, it features a larger 12.3″ infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support, enhanced ambient lighting and refined interior trims. The latest model also offers Level-2 ADAS safety technology on higher variants, alongside its efficient 1.5 L turbocharged engine and 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, making it a well-rounded choice for daily drives, family trips or SUV rentals in Malaysia.

Frequently Asked Questions
A typical Proton X70 rental includes the SUV, insurance, basic mileage (depending on the plan), and full safety features such as airbags, ABS, ESC, 360° camera and Apple/Android connectivity.
The X70 comfortably seats 5 adults with generous legroom and headroom, making it great for family trips or business travel. Its boot space is around 515 – 520 litres, which can fit about 2–3 large suitcases (or a mix of large and medium bags) with room to spare for smaller items. If you need more cargo room, the rear seats can be folded down to expand the space even further for bulkier loads.
Yes — it has a large 12.3″ touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice control (“Hi Proton”), and built-in navigation.
The Proton X70 has a claimed fuel consumption of around 7.3 L per 100 km (which equates to roughly 13.7 km per litre) with its 1.5 L turbocharged engine and 7‑speed DCT — making it reasonably efficient for a C‑segment SUV whether you’re doing city driving, highways, or mixed routes. Most drivers can expect around 7–9 L/100 km in real‑world conditions depending on traffic and driving style.
The Proton X70’s cabin comfort and interior quality often feel more upmarket than its price would suggest. With spacious seating, quality materials and refinements like stone‑grey Nappa leather upholstery on higher variants, many drivers find the interior ambience comparable to SUVs from more premium brands — offering generous legroom and a refined ride that keeps occupants comfortable on longer journeys. Reviewers have noted the X70’s cabin feel and quietness rivals or even surpasses some rivals in its class, giving it a premium feel without the premium price tag.
Depending on the variant, ADAS features like AEB, ACC, LDW, lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, and multiple airbags provide modern safety support.
1. Short‑term Visitors (Under 90 Days)
If you're from any ASEAN country, you can drive using your valid domestic driving licence issued in English—no IDP required.
If you're from a non-ASEAN country, you must carry a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your domestic licence. Ensure the licence is in English or officially translated.

2. Long‑Term Stay (Over 90 Days)
As of May 19, 2025, the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) ended all standard license conversion processes for most foreigners.
(Paul Tan's Automotive News)Exceptions still allowed to convert include:
Diplomats
Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) participants
Foreigners already married to Malaysian citizens
ASEAN citizens still driving with their domestic licences under the 1985 agreement
Tourists staying less than 12 months driving with IDP under Geneva/Vienna conventions

Others not exempt must follow the same licensing process as Malaysians, including safety briefing, theory and practical tests, and applying for a Probationary Driving Licence (PDL).

3. Rental Companies' Policies
Many car rental providers accept a valid foreign licence (and an IDP is needed) without requiring conversion—particularly for short stays.
Do not rent a car using an invalid licence—this may lead to traffic fines (up to RM 1,000 or 3 months jail) or insurance refusals. JPJ has also conducted enforcement operations against rentals given to foreigners without a valid licence.
